Africa's booming Transport & Logistics (T&L) sector

The T&L sector in Africa has raised almost US$200 million in the first eight months of 2021, and US$217 million in funding in 2020. Upcoming trade corridor projects, including the Abidjan-Lagos motorway, present opportunities in the region. Ghana will see stronger connectivity with neighbouring countries, with 16 infrastructure projects inclusive of 10 transportation projects in the pipeline.

Now, there is a growing focus in enhancing supply chains following the pandemic. African countries are improving their manufacturing capacities and transport infrastructure via projects such as Ghana’s railway plan to build a 3,800km rail network. Demand for quality warehousing and resilient distribution networks is also increasing, to drive better cost efficiencies.

Key drivers of growth

In West Africa, digitalisation and the boom in E-commerce is transforming the T&L sector. Digitalisation of logistics in the form of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions is streamlining cross-border supply chains. Growing internet penetration and emerging cross-border e-commerce markets are also boosting the West African E-commerce market. The value of Ghana’s E-commerce market is anticipated to expand from US$481 million in 2021 to US$674 million in 2025, with more than 11 million users.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been on the rise in West Africa with Ghana’s comprehensive National Electric Mobility Policy Framework guiding the development & scale-up of EVs. The Africa Electric Bus Market was valued at US$873 million in 2021 and is projected to reach US$1.55 billion by 2027.

Join us to gain the latest market insights on West Africa’s T&L landscape, and learn about key sectoral opportunities in the region. We will also share more about a follow-up mission to West Africa that offers a front row seat on the region’s opportunities.
