The demand for healthcare resources is rapidly rising in many countries. This is driven by ageing populations, increasing chronic disease burdens and in some cases, newer but more costly modalities of treatment. Sustainability in healthcare is now more crucial than ever as we strive to provide safe, quality and value-based care to our patients and the populations which we serve.
The 13th Public Health and Occupational Medicine (PHOM) Conference’s theme, “Sustainable Health for All”, highlights the urgency of building sustainability in the healthcare system. The conference will be held on 04 - 05 Oct 2018 at One Farrer Hotel and will bring together thought leaders, researchers, clinicians and policymakers to discuss this pertinent challenge. We will explore several areas critical to achieving sustainability:
Shifting from "healthcare to health" will examine how we can invest in upstream preventive care to keep our populations healthy and reduce costlier downstream care.
Maximizing value will deliberate how we can maximize health outcomes against the cost of delivering the outcomes, moving away from the traditional model of optimizing health outcomes at all cost.
Harnessing the 4th Industrial Revolution technologies will explore how innovations in medical technologies and rapid advancements in information and communications technology (ICT) can help improve healthcare sustainability.
The need to change the way we think about, organize and deliver healthcare is more pressing than ever. Join us at the 13th PHOM conference to learn how we can accelerate these changes.

A) Pre-Conference Workshop ATheme | Health Economics |
Title of Workshop | A (Mostly Painless) Introduction to Health Economic Evaluation |
Synopsis | This workshop will provide a practical introduction to health economic evaluation and the concepts behind economic thinking. Participants will learn about the different types of economic evaluation (including cost analysis, cost effectiveness analysis and cost-benefit analysis) principles of costing and outcomes measurement, how to compute incremental cost-effectiveness ratios, understand the use of these analyses in clinical and policy decision-making and discuss the limitations of these approaches. Learning will be reinforced by hands-on exercises throughout. |
Venue | Tutorial Room 2, SSH SPH |
Capacity | 30 pax |
B) Pre-Conference Workshop B
Theme | Use of GIS in PH/OM |
Title of Workshop | Geographic Information System and Geospatial Analysis |
Synopsis | Geographical information systems (GIS) are a crucial tool for healthcare, helping us explore disease landscapes and address healthcare management issues. With more spatial disease and patient data being collected, key questions of disease incidence, resource allocation and coverage can be investigated. This workshop aims to introduce public health practitioners to these geospatial analyses in a practical setting. We introduce important concepts and tools used for disease management within Singapore, which can be utilised and expanded on by participants for their own investigations. |
Venue | Computer Lab 2, SSH SPH |
Capacity | 45 pax |
*Limited slots available. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
