Stewardship Asia Roundtable 2019
Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore
The last 30 years have been synonymous with growth, improvement and development, juxtaposed with disruptions, change and volatility. As highlighted by the Business & Sustainable Development Commission (BSDC) report, “despite successes, our current model of development is deeply flawed. Signs of failure and imperfections in today’s markets are everywhere.” As the familiar quote from Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” goes, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. The tenure of businesses is shortening while population lifespan is increasing; there is proliferation of corporate governance codes while ownership is weakening with fragmentation of shareholding; environmental and societal concerns are pressuring businesses to strive for purpose beyond profit. This is a time when Business finds itself at an inflexion point. A successful Business Future may well hinge on a re-discovery of Stewardship, to guide the recalibration of our trajectory and bring enduring success for businesses and the global community, and for our future generations. Businesses must, and can be a force of good.
